iPhone 4: FaceTime

In 1990, video calling was just a dream. Who would have thought that it would become a reality after two decades, give or take? In 2010, Apple introduced us to iPhone 4 and, with it, FaceTime, and what we thought as almost impossible two decades ago is now staring us in the face.

FaceTime is a feature of iPhone 4 that is not commonly discussed. It may be because it doesn’t work with other phones or computers unless it’s from Apple. That aside, FaceTime is very easy to use. If you want to start a video call, just find your contact and tap the FaceTime button and the video call is initiated. You can also choose to start FaceTime while having a phone call. Again, just tap the FaceTime button and the other party will be asked for permission if he or she wants to accept the video call.

iPhone 4 and other newer iPhone products have two cameras, front and back, for FaceTime. You can also switch camera views, from front to back, during a video call. Just tap the switch camera button and you’ll be able to change camera views at ease.

What is great about FaceTime is that it does not depend on phone signal for video and sound quality. Aside from that, you don’t need to open an account to use it, unlike other video calling services like Skype.

There are also some negative things about FaceTime. The fact that it doesn’t work via 3G is a bit of a disappointment for many. Of course, it wouldn’t be an issue for you if you are always connected to a hotspot, still it could be great if it was able to connect via 3G too.

Verdict: FaceTime is a great iPhone 4 feature but it is not perfect. Nevertheless, it is still a great feature for communication.
